The Post-Work Revolution: Exposing the Hard Work Myth and Reclaiming Our Future
Originally published on our late website on November 15, 2023, now actualized and updated for 2025 and our new space on Substack.
For decades, society has been fed the same promise: “Tighten your belts, sacrifice a little longer, and prosperity will come.” Each economic crisis, each wave of technological change, and each corporate restructuring has been accompanied by the same tired speech.
"Yes, times are tough. But just hold on a little longer—work harder, accept the struggles, and soon, automation, innovation, and economic growth will lift everyone into prosperity."
But in 2025, it has become painfully clear: that future never arrives.
Every generation hears the same promise. Every generation is told that temporary sacrifices will lead to long-term gains. But as history repeats itself, it becomes obvious that these promises are not delayed—they are simply never meant to be fulfilled. The truth is, capitalism’s promise of shared prosperity is an illusion, and the echo of its empty words is growing fainter with every cycle.
If AI and automation are making record profits, why are workers still being told to tighten their belts? Why, once again, are we being asked to suffer now for a paradise that never comes?
The answer is simple: because the system is designed to ensure that wealth flows upward, not outward.
The Cycle of Empty Promises and Economic Betrayal
The Golden Age of Work: When Hard Work Meant Stability
There was a time when the promise of economic growth was partially true. In the post-war era of the 1950s and 60s, workers who put in effort could expect:
A livable wage
Job security and pensions
Homeownership on a single income
A comfortable retirement
Hard work actually did pay off—because unions fought for fair wages, regulations prevented corporate excess, and governments invested in public infrastructure.
But then the cracks began to show.
Neoliberalism and the First Great Betrayal
By the 1980s, capitalism’s priorities shifted. The wealthy no longer needed to share gains with workers. Instead, wages stagnated while corporate profits soared.
But rather than admit the system was failing workers, leaders recycled the old lie:
"Yes, wages are low, and job security is disappearing. But if we deregulate, cut taxes, and let corporations thrive, the benefits will trickle down to you."
Workers tightened their belts. The benefits never came.
The Tech Boom and the Second False Promise
In the 1990s and 2000s, as globalization and automation began eliminating jobs, another empty promise arrived:
"Yes, outsourcing and automation are replacing jobs, but don't worry—this will create new and better jobs!"
A few industries boomed. But for the average worker? Wages remained stagnant, benefits eroded, and economic security became a thing of the past.
Workers were once again told to sacrifice a little longer. They did. The benefits never came.
The AI Revolution and the Third Betrayal
Now, in 2025, the next version of this promise is emerging:
"Yes, AI is eliminating millions of jobs, but don’t worry—this will free you for better work, and in time, everyone will benefit."
Once again, workers are expected to tighten their belts—to work harder, accept wage cuts, and endure financial insecurity—because soon, automation will bring prosperity for all.
But history has already answered this question:
Will AI make billionaires richer? Yes.
Will it create higher wages and shorter workweeks for workers? No—unless we demand it.
This is not a temporary phase of capitalism. This is capitalism’s final form—a system where profits are generated without workers, and yet those workers are still expected to suffer for a future that will never come.
Why Hard Work is No Longer Enough
The fundamental truth is this:
Hard work is only valuable when labor is necessary.
As AI and automation take over industries, the value of human labor is rapidly decreasing. And yet, instead of allowing this technological progress to create a better life for everyone, corporations and governments continue to insist that workers must:
Prove their worth through relentless labor
Accept stagnating wages despite record profits
Delay their dreams of security, homeownership, and retirement
But why? If machines can do more, shouldn’t people be working less, not more? If AI is producing wealth, why isn’t that wealth being redistributed to the people AI has replaced?
The answer is simple: because capitalism is not designed to reward work—it is designed to extract profit.
If labor is no longer the key to prosperity, then the economic model itself must change.
The Post-Work Future: What Should Replace Hard Work?
If AI is making human labor obsolete, then workers must stop clinging to the outdated idea that effort alone guarantees success. Instead of begging for scraps from automation’s profits, workers must demand a new social contract—one where AI is used to create less work, more freedom, and universal economic security.
AI and automation are not the enemy. The enemy is an economic system that refuses to distribute their benefits fairly.
Breaking the Cycle: The End of the Empty Promises
If history has taught us anything, it is that waiting for capitalism to deliver on its promises is a losing game. Each time, the cycle repeats:
Workers are told to sacrifice for a better future.
That future never arrives.
The wealth flows to the top.
A new crisis emerges, and workers are told to sacrifice again.
This will not change unless people reject the ideology of hard work and demand a new model of economic justice.
The next revolution will not be about fighting for jobs—it will be about fighting for freedom from unnecessary labor.
A post-work society is not a utopian fantasy. It is the only logical response to a world where machines can generate wealth without human toil.
The people who tell you to "work harder" are the same people who have never had to struggle. The people who tell you "prosperity is coming" are the same people who benefit from its delay.
The future does not belong to those who grind themselves into exhaustion. It belongs to those who refuse to believe in a rigged game.
The time has come to stop tightening our belts for a future that never arrives. Instead, we must demand what is rightfully ours. If AI is creating wealth, that wealth belongs to everyone, not just the elite.
If work is no longer necessary, then it is time to stop working for survival and start living for fulfillment.
Because the truth is clear: The paradise they keep promising will never come—unless we take it for ourselves.
